SportPesa Quits Kenyan Operations

Online betting firm SportPesa has quit its Kenyan operations because of a change in Kenyan betting tax.

Last week, Kenya’s parliament voted to raise the excise duty on all betting platforms to 20%, from an initial 10%.

A SportPesa spokesperson said: “SportPesa is disappointed with the decision by the Kenyan legislature to impose a 20% excise tax on all betting stakes. Until such time that adequate taxation and a non-hostile regulatory environment is returned, the SportPesa brand will halt operations in Kenya. SportPesa’s operational closure in Kenya will not impact our business operations in other markets or our global sponsorships.”

In August , SportPesa stated it had cancelled its sports sponsorships in Kenya, but subsequently said that it could restart them if it was allowed to spread payments of unpaid tax over several years.
