LET Heads to Kenya

11 Oct 2019

Golf’s Ladies European Tour (LET) will end its 2019 season in Kenya after agreeing a deal to stage a new tournament in the East African country.

The Magical Kenya Ladies Open will take place from 5-8 December on the Baobab Course at Vipingo Ridge, Kilifi County.

German agency U.COM Event will be the promoter of the tournament, with the Kenya Tourist Board signing on as title sponsor and financial services brand M-Pesa agreeing a deal to become a presenting sponsor.

The 72-hole stroke play competition will mark the first pro women’s golf tournament in the region, with the LET stating it expects a field of 96 players. The Magical Kenya Ladies Open will be preceded by a pro-am on 4 December, with event organisers contacting the top amateur Kenyan golfers to play alongside the professionals.

“Our long-term vision of bringing women’s professional golf to Kenya is finally becoming a reality,” says Dirk Glittenberg, Managing Director of U.COM Event. “We are always striving to find new destinations for the Ladies European Tour and the Kenyan Coast will be a very memorable one for all players, their guests and TV spectators worldwide.”

“The announcement of the Magical Kenya Ladies Open is a proud moment for everyone at the Ladies European Tour and we are excited to help Kenya build its reputation as a preferred golf destination for women and girls,” says Ladies European Tour Chair, Marta Figueras-Dotti.

The announcement comes with the LET in the midst of a search for a new chief executive. Mark Lichtenhein departed from the position at the end of his contract on 30 September.
